Embodied Theodicy: From Conceptual to Bodily Engagements with Suffering

Abstract This article leverages ethnographic research on spiritual journeys to expand traditional definitions of theodicy. Embodied theodicy builds upon embodiment literature demonstrate how bodily experiences have real emotional consequences—they the potential change individuals make sense their suffering. Whereas in some cases experience pain leads suffering, others, provides with perspective suffering and helps them overcome it. Data from two journeys, El Camino de Santiago a Vipassana meditation retreat, introduce three models embodied theodicy: as purifier, teacher, solidarity. bridges meaning-making concerns classical neoclassical theories poststructuralists contemporary scholars.
